Chia Fresca

I've posted three variations on this recipe below. I have not yet tried these as I simply wanted to get some options posted along with the posting on Chia Seeds as a healthy ingredient. I am also working on a more exotic take and an alcoholic beverage based upon Chia Fresca, so look for those in the coming posts.

Please note when considering Chia Fresca recipes on the internet: the number one problem that arises is that people simply use too much chia in their Chia Frescas and as a result they become too thick and gelatinous to drink without gagging on the texture. Chia Fresca should still be largely liquid - not gel!

Traditional Chia Fresca:

  • 1/2 cup lime juice (may sub lemon juice)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 10 cups water
  • 3 Tbsp chia seeds
  • fresh mint sprigs
  1. Fully dissolve sugar into water.
  2. Stir in the lime juice and chia seeds.
  3. Let chia seeds dissolve, stirring every 5 minutes to prevent seeds from clumping.
  4. Serve over ice and mint sprigs.

Refreshing Chia Fresca:

  • 1/2 cup lemon or lime juice
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate juice (may sub cranberry juice)
  • 3 Tbsp chia seeds
  • 9 cups water
  1. Mix all ingredients together well.
  2. Let chia seeds dissolve, stirring every 5 minutes to prevent seeds from clumping.
  3. Serve over ice.
Note: This version is much less sweet than the traditional version, but more refreshing.

Single Chia Fresca:

  • 8 ounces cold water
  • 1-2 fresh lemon or lime slices
  • sweetener of choice (optional & to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp chia seeds
  1. Mix all ingredients in a glass and stir thoroughly.
  2. Let chia seeds dissolve, stirring every 5 minutes to prevent seeds from clumping.
  3. Add ice if desired. Drink immediately.
